Moving to Finland

Moving to Finland

The general source of information is the Migri website, which is the state agency handling immigration questions. The Application Finder will help you find the right application and the information you need. Remember that this article can get old, or someone might forget to update it if anything significantly changes. Also, read about studying in Finland.

Our additional short guide. Has a very small number of words.

Finnish Citizen

Welcome home! Check your residence in DVV, and register your new home address if needed.

Other Nordic Citizens (Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland)

If you stay more than 90 days in Finland, register your right of residence at the DVV (Digital and Population Data Services Agency).

Then, you can open any Finnish bank account to gain strong authentication and access to all Finnish online services.

European Citizen (EU Member State, Liechtenstein or Switzerland)

If you stay more than 90 days in Finland, apply to Migri to register your right of residence. Without this step, you can’t legally reside in Finland.

After receiving your registration answer, go to DVV and register your home municipality and address. Without this step, your services might be significantly limited (you will know one day if you go to the bank or try to buy car insurance).

Then, you can open any Finnish bank account to gain strong authentication and access to all Finnish online services.

Any other country

To visit Finland, you might need a visa.

You must have a residence permit for long-term residence. The Migri website has information about residence permit applications for studies.
